Hot Dang! The films are processed!

First of all, I'd like to congratulate my sister, Azah Ariff on the engagement to Borhan, a very nice chap from Tanah Merah, on 11-OCT-2008. Credit also goes to Fadzillah ( 012-2461931) he he, a little advertising, who did the hantaran deco.

All shots were taken with an el'cheapo RM9.80 Fuji Superia XTRA 400 + Olympus OM-1n + Zuiko 50mm f1.4. The cost of processing the film and converting it to CD was RM6.50, done by the lab I usually go to.

Please note that no alteration was done on the colours, levels, saturation. This is straight scan from my negatives and resized for web.

Without further adieu, I present my sister's best engagement pics:

Ni yang tak tahan ni....
My portrait, taken by my sister, Azah Ariff, an aspiring photographer too, on her engagement day, 11-OCT-2008, taken with Fuji Superia XTRA 400 & Olympus OM-1n+Zuiko 50mm f1.4. She is now engaged to Borhan, a very nice chap. Damn, she had one shot and she nailed it! It's perfect! This is me.......in a frame!

It's nice shooting film again once in a while.

salam Aj, pencahayaan untuk Olympus OM-1n tu mcm mane ek ? ke natural lighting yg bergantung pada lens 50mm f1.4 tu.. serius color filem sgt cantik.... sgt2 berbeza ngan digital..huhuhu mcmmane ngan d90 puas hati? nak tau gak review dari aj. Sat 1-Nov-2008 10:08

Hot Dang I got My Olympus OM-1n after all!

Hot Dang! I finally got my Olympus OM-1n!

Thanks to an avid collector Teoh from Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. I saw his ad on the internet and quickly called him up, earlier this month.

I had the 50mm f1.4 for over a year without a body, and today I have one!

I've got a Fuji Neopan 400 with 26 frames left, rewound it, and stuck an "el-cheapo" FUJI Superia X-TRA 400 just to have a go at it for my sister's engagement tomorrow.

So, we'll see how it goes tomorrow, and see how the film turns out. I'm so excited to shoot film again. For now. Cheers!

D90

Updated 17-OCT-2008: Note to self: No more talk about switching to Nikon or Mamiya or any other makes. Just get off my a** and get more with whatever I have now.

That's it. I'm getting the new Nikon D90(Dang! It's only USD$1,000)! Bye bye Canon.

Note to Canon Inc. :

Please stop making any more new DLSRs before you start thinking of reducing your retail prices. Canon's new 50D camera is still more expensive than the D90. Talk about features difference. What the...?

My comment:
In early 2000 Canon was the leader in DSLR while Nikon was a bit behind. Probably because Canon manufactures it's own CMOS sensor, and has already has a solid production line for DSLR. Nikon was a late boomer and had yet come to a decent sensor. And today, Nikon has stepped up on the plate and regain it's place as the market leader of today's DSLR (this is strictly comparing Nikon to Canon).

AJ, is this yourself speaking?

Ha ha. Ya this WAS me speaking. Yes I wish I had switched to Nikon. I've quiet down a bit now cos I've gotten myself a NIKON-to-CANON lens adapter! Which means now I can shoot NIKON lenses on my CANON body! Superb Nikon Glasses on Canon bodies. Ha ha. Tried it out, and it works. Damn sharp! Kewlies! Tue 14-Oct-2008 01:07

My wishlist

My immediate wishlist:
1. Canon EF 28mm f1.8
Why this lens (it's the closest to a 50mm lens after 1.6x crop factor, at the widest aperture. Long way to go for the f1.4 equivalent)

My mid term wishlist:
1. Nikon D300
2. 50mm f1.4
3. AC/DC studio light (2 units)

My long term wishlist:
1. Nikon D3
2. AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED
3. AF-D 80-200 f2.8

Karof, thanks for the note. It's a good question you've got there. And this questions of brand loyalty has been lingering and boggling many photographers forced to pick a "side". Professionally, camera gears to me are just merely a tool to create a photograph. Given credit, all makes of cameras, lenses and accessories, have their own strengths. It's so happens that I've made this decision based on my needs. After using Canons for quite a while, I started to notice that the Canon lenses are not as sharp compared to Nikons (let's just talk about these two makes, while leaving out Zeiss and Leica lenses). This is based on my personal experience during a commercial assignment photographing fine art. Given the exact circumstance of using both 50mm f1.8, and same exposure settings on a Canon 20D and a Nikon D200, the results were crushing my Canons. Granted that the D200 has higher pixels than the 20D, but I've also tested it against D70s which has a lower pixel count than the 20D, the winner is still Nikon in terms of shapness.

When I meant sharpness, I'm looking for fine detail in bringing out small textures, bumps on surfaces. So, for my commercial assignments, I NEED A NIKON (well actually I need a Hasselblad H3D, which I can rent from a studio if the client has a budget). This is because commercial assignments require the final images ready for other reproductions in various formats and dimensions, such as archival, magazines, posters and billboards. Therefore, since the H3D is out of reach, I'll settle with a Nikon D3, or a D300 for that matter. Why not D700? Answer: Might as well a Nikon D3.

End of part 1

Why Canon?
Some images need softness, especially in weddings, and wedding portraits, where the shallowest depth of field will create the most soothing mood in the photographs. Canons sensors are also great in low light (until now the D300 and above has stepped out on the plate).
Plus I love the Canons focusing speed. I just point and it responds damn well to my commands. But, when I'm on commercial assignments, I gotta admit, I'm not satisfied.

End of part 2

Budget.
Now, since I'm photographing for money, finance factor also comes into factor. There are lots of other things to consider apart getting top gears. Therefore, my move is to keep my 20D and get a D300 (btw, the D300 to me is equivalent to a 1D mk X series, in terms of focusing points, ISO sensitivity, focusing speed, and frames per second, at HALF THE PRICE!).

End of part 3
Lenses.
Anybody can tell you that Nikon lenses from the old days till now can fit into any Nikon bodies. But not so on a Canon. The EF-S lenses cant be mounted on the 5D, 1D series, or 10D and below. And for a decent image, you'll need to invest in a pricey "L" lens. Whereas a cheap Nikon lens can achieve a similar quality in terms of colour and sharpness.

End of part 4
Conclusion.

The ideal deal would be a mesh of Canon bodies with Nikon lenses.
I'll probably follow my Darkroom teacher's (Mustaffa) advice, which will be to get a Mamiya 645AFD+3 lenses+ a digital back (22megapixels). I guess by the time, I've got some cash to get the Mamiya, the used market for this baby has gone down to an affordable price. Fingers crossed.

So, there you go. That's the reason. Hope it's clear. Cheers mate!

How we did it.

Ni saya nak follow-up on "how we did it". Basically, ni diagram/photo behind the scenes dan setup kami. The pics shows Mhd Latif tengah berdiri untuk test shots.

(in white T:Bob, in khaki green T: Kyrol)

Ni ada gambar "How we did it" lagi, courtesy of Bob@Razali Hassan.

The Manfrotto 190X makes mouting our cameras easy, especially at a very low angle. Saya pakai cable release switch untuk assignment ni, dan kami trigger flash pakai China Made wireless radio transmitters model PT-04.

Ni gambar keseluruhan setup.

kenapa tak pelawa aku??? macam best jer... Wed 13-Aug-2008 04:58

Aloo littestars, pertama kali, outing ni Kyrol yang organise, jadi aku follow dia la. Kedua, outing camni kalau sikit org lagi senang. Mungkin lepas ni boleh buat outing macam strobist Seattle organised by Chase Jarvis. Kita cari tempat lapang, sumbat 30-40 photographers, 10 talent, dan syarat dia, setiap photographer kena ada at least 1 flash, 1 china made wireless radio transmitter+receiver, lightstand, umbrella bracket & umbrella reflector. Itu macam ada mau join ka? Tue 19-Aug-2008 00:38

Simple portraiture

Portrait of Lyn's grandpa, taken during her wedding with Faizal on 29-JUN-2008. It was important that I took this shot because the family specifically mentioned it. Very special this one indeed.

It's been a long way for me to reach where I am right now. And at this moment, I am ready to embark to the next level of photography. A meaningful leap, photography with a purpose.

Best wishes!

For photographers:
ISO 100, f1.8, 1/800s with Canon 20D

Strobist outing: Malaysia National Sprinter, Mhd Latif bin Nyat

kyrol from papstudio.com wrote:

Satu outing telah dilakukan pada pada 20 July 2008 hasil cetusan idea gue dan sifu azharariff kerana minat yang mendalam terhadap STROBIST.

3. Bob (fotomomo)

MODEL:
En Mhd Latif (Wakil Malaysia di Sukan Olympic Beijing) acara balapan

KONSEP:
Sukan, Iklan Jenama Sukan, Olahraga

Terima kasih Kerol bebanyak sebab:
3. invite kami(bob & aku) dlm circle MSN athletes.

At this point aku baru load gambar dlm laptop. Japgi lepas makan import dlm lightroom and we'll see some photos from there.

OK, ni yang aku baru process. Aku figure, a black & white photo would tell more, in terms of texture, dan isolate the background distration.

Caption: Mhd Latif bin Nyat, National Athlete (Track & Field) for Malaysia. Photographed at Majlis Sukan Negara's (MSN) training track.

ISO200, 1/200s, f11, 1xsb800, 1xsb600,2x550EX(1 snoot+1 grid)

Sebelum start session kami, kami minta Latif relek kejap, sementara kami set lights. Pada asalnya, exercise Strobist ni, idea besar saya nak pakai one(1) light only. Tapi bila Kyrol bawak 2 lights, saya pun ada dua lights, masing2 tengok muka masing, terus jadi gila kuasa. Alang-alang ada 4 lights, apa laga...tarus taruk 4 lights. Gambar ni sebenarnya salah satu dari series test shot. Tapi Latif posing baik, so, tarus jadi portrait shot. Sempoi la Latif ni...

Setup:
1. SB-800 (1/4th power, 85mm zoom, f11) positioned camera left, distance sedepa dari subject.
2. SB-600 (1/4th power, 85mm zoom, f11) positioned camera right, distance sedepa dari subject.
3. 550EX (1/4th power, 80mm zoom, f11) positioned 45degrees camera right, with snoot pointed to subject. distance dua depa dari subject.
4. 550EX (1/8th power, zoom 35mm, f5.6) positioned 45degress camera right, with grid pointed to subject, distance sehasta dari subject. Light ni sepatutnya jadi rim light, tapi light ni selalu tak fire...ampeh...kena tweak the receiver lagik...

Hmm...bila dah tengok gambar ni, patutnya aku sembunyikan rim light tu kt belakang badan Latif, then baru ada rim light dari blakang shining kat rambut dia, creating a separation from the background. Takpelah, next outing.

Kyrol pakai Sekonic L308s, saya pakai Polaris light/flashmeter.

Lepas shot kat starting line, kami buat keputusan pindah kat track line yg dekat dengan grand stand, sebab background takde kereta parking. This time kami nak shoot Latif tengah sprint. So, macam biasa, geng kita la jadi dummy.

Kalau korang perasan, kat background, Latif dah get in position untuk sprint. Light kami cuma expose kat tempat Kyrol lompat tu.

Ni athlete negara kita, lompat tinggi gaya bebas. Memang cun. Pasti menang punya beb! Ha ha.. Alamak Kyrol, nanti ko sure posting gambar sprint aku punya...kah kah kah...

2 sidelights+1 fill light+1 rim light (yang fire tak fire pun...ampeh)

Apa tujuan exercise Strobist ni? Untuk melatih diri kita shoot for a purpose.

Walaubagaimanapun, saya berpuas hati dengan gambar ni, sebab semua light menyala (fired up) termasuk back light. Jadi dapat la sikit rim light kat rambut Latif to separate him from the dark background. Light yang lain fall-off kat tempat yang sepatutnya. Jadi, walaupun pose tak best sangat, at least lights semua ok. Ini dia hasilnya. Enjoy!

ISO200, 1/200s, f11.
2xsidelights at 1/4th power, front snoot 1/16th & rimlight 1/8th power.

Focusing: pre-focus at a marked spot.

br tgk thread ni dlm photoskool, mmg menarik outing sebegini..anyway, amat admire ur work dr dulu..in case kalau trn penang mtk2 roger la okey!mayb blh menuntut sket Mon 4-Aug-2008 03:02
